Teen unemployment reduces income in adulthood and hurts the economy

In an interview on Air1’s syndicated Closer Look program, Michael Sultsman, Research Director of the Employment Policies Institute, asserted that the current high teen unemployment rate can have a lasting negative effect on future wages, unemployment, and the economy overall. On a more personal level, statistics show that young people with work experience in their senior year of high school have higher incomes 6-9 years down the line. He also notes that higher tax cities pose a bigger challenge for teens as higher effective wages lead to less employers being willing to take on a new worker and not having these opportunities can lead to a “lost generation” effect that some European nations face. However, in spite of these issues, teens can improve their chances of landing a job if they employ the right strategies.
