Peltier: Conservatives should take a “practical approach” to diversity issues on college campuses There has been much controversy over incidents of discrimination at college campuses across the country and what should be done to prevent them. This issue is epitomized by the dispute over the University of Southern California’s diversity resolution which came about after student body president Rini Sampath was struck with a cup and a racial slur. Conservatives on campus have been sympathetic but feel that initiatives to promote diversity have cost and academic freedom problems. However, if such proposals are looked at based on the perspective of a business decision: revenue from new students, risks of litigation, and the costs (tangible and intangible), these precarious situations can be managed in a way that will satisfy both conservatives and students dealing with discrimination.
