Obama announces earlier availability of financial aid applications Starting next year, students can file for aid with the FAFSA for the upcoming school year starting in October, three months earlier than the existing January start. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan believes this change may allow students to know whether or not they can afford college before application deadlines which can be especially helpful for students who have to make decisions on whether or not to apply to a college before the financial aid application becomes available.
