National park maintenance behind schedule but government wants to add more parks If you’re headed to a national park this summer, you may notice some less-than-appealing features. This is because the government has an $11.5 billion backlog of maintenance for the parks not covered by user fees that have been restricted by law nor tax dollars. However, instead of maintaining the existing parks and changing user fees to reflect the cost and value to the visitor, seven brand new parks are being added, spreading the budget even thinner.
