Some colleges, including the University of Wisconsin, have created
competency-based degree programs that evaluate students’ learning by
measuring their ability to perform tasks and their knowledge of the
subject, instead of the duration of time spent in a class. The
Department of Education has given the green light for these programs
to receive Federal Student Aid funds, but some critics feel these
programs may be devolve into diploma mills.
